Atiku, Obi, Tinubu Risk Jail Terms Over Religious, Ethnic-Motivated Campaigns

The candidates of Nigeria’s leading political parties in the February 25 presidential election risk jail terms if probed and eventually prosecuted over the contents and directions of their campaigns in the run-up to the fiercely-fought electoral contest.
A review of the campaigns of Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Peter Obi of the Labour Party (LP) and Bola Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress (APC) indicates that the candidates engaged in either ethnic, sectional or religious-motivated pitch for votes ahead of the election, in what is a clear violation of Nigeria’s electoral law.
FG Stops Deductions Of Paris Club Debt From States Accounts

The Federal Government has agreed to stop deductions from the state government’s accounts to meet the Local Government Councils London/Paris Club obligations.
Aminu Tambuwal, outgoing Chairman of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF), disclosed this while briefing governors across the 36 states in a meeting held on Tuesday night.
He said Zainab Ahmed, the Minister of Finance, Budget and National Planning, has also ensured that monies so far deducted be paid back to the states.

Two members of the cabinet of outgoing President Muhammadu Buhari, on Wednesday, described the establishment of Minister of State portfolios as unconstitutional.
Festus Keyamo, the Minister of State for Labour and Employment, and Ramatu Aliyu, the Minister of State for Federal Capital Territory, described the designation which they have held for about four years as a constitutional aberration.
“Mr President, the concept or designation of ‘Minister of State’ is a constitutional aberration and is practically not working for many so appointed,” Mr Keyamo, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, said in his farewell message during the valedictory session of the Federal Executive Council (FEC) on Wednesday.
Court Dismisses Police Application To Arraign Seun Kuti Over Alleged Assault

Chief Magistrate Adeola Olatunbosun has dismissed an application by the Nigeria Police Force seeking to arraign Afrobeat singer, Seun Kuti, over an alleged assault of a police officer.
Olatunbosun adjourned the hearing to July 3 to await legal advice from the Office of the Directorate of Public Prosecutions on the matter.
The musician came to the Chief Magistrate’s court in the Sabo-Yaba area of Lagos State after he was released on bail on Tuesday. He had been in detention at the State Criminal Investigative Department Panti since May 15.
